âI should warn you, there will be some discomfort,â Lena said to Seven. He nodded and beside me, Zeb moved his weight from foot to foot. Weâd both been antsy since weâd woken to a dark cabin with Seven still asleep between us.
After weâd thrown together a quick supper, Zeb had woken Sev to eat before we needed to leave. Our meal had been especially quiet and none of us had eaten much. The reprieve weâd had for the afternoon was over.
We stood in the middle of the open field behind the main barn on the Warren farm. Iâd ridden horses and played in my wolf skin as a pup back here for as long as I could remember. The barn blocked most of the light from the house and there were no trees to obstruct any light from the moon. Which wasnât full tonight, but the glowing sliver sat up in a cloudless sky. I hoped it was enough for the spell Lena planned to do.
Lena looked toward Zeb and I. We stood on one side of the circle Lena had constructed from stones that usually sat around the fire pit in the backyard. On the other side, Fergus, Deck, Colt, and Gavin stood quietly. All of them kept looking from Seven to Zeb and I and back again. It was putting me even more on edge than I already was.
Lena moved to pull something out of the leather satchel sitting on the ground inside the circle. Seven looked at us. I brought up a little smile for him, hoping to convey that we were here and not going anywhere. I did wonder what heâd be like with all his memories. A completely different person? I hoped not, but I was sure we could figure it out. I didnât let myself dwell on the fear he might get his memories back and decide he didnât want Zeb or me at all.
Lena stood up, moonlight glinting off something in her hand. A knife.
âLena.â Zebâs voice was a low growl.
She stopped in front of Seven, ignoring Zeb completely. âOn your knees, Seven.â
My heart started to beat faster. What was she going to do with that knife?
âEasy, guys,â Deck said, moving around the stone circle toward us. âBlood is often a spell component.â
Seven swallowed, the sound audible in the darkness, and did as she asked. The scent of his fear coated the back of my throat. I really didnât like the way this was going. Why wouldnât Lena speak to us? Beside me, Zeb started to growl, a low, grating sound from deep in his chest.
âIâm okay, Zeb,â Seven said, looking away from Lena.
It was at that moment, she struck. She stretched out the hand not holding the knife and threw white powder into the air and chanted an incantation. The powder raced to Seven, moving like it was alive and clung to his skin and clothes. His eyes went wide, but he didnât move. Not a muscle.
Zeb roared, lunging forward only to bounce back like heâd struck a solid wall instead of air.
